How close are international airports?
Two international airports are within 30 miles of Calumet County, the Appleton International Airport (ATW) and Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) in Green Bay. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is about an hour away, and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is less than 3 hours away.
How close are major sports?
One of the US Biathlon team’s Olympic training facilities is located right here in Calumet County in Brillion at Ariens Nordic Center. Additionally, Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers, is less than 30 minutes by car from Calumet County. There are 3 minor league baseball teams located less than 30 minutes away and include the Green Bay Rockers, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, and in Appleton, where the Milwaukee Brewers High-A affiliate, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, plays. Named for a limestone cliff of the Niagara Escarpment, High Cliff is fixed on Lake Winnebago’s northeastern shore. Boating, sailing, year-round fishing, and swimming opportunities are as abundant as the trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. And if you want your getaway to be overnight, bring your camper! Additionally, within the park area are both shaded and exposed cliff habitats and talus slopes supporting wet-mesic forest. Outstanding examples of conical and effigy mounds are located above the escarpment as well as a 40-foot observation tower offering a breathtakingly spectacular view of Lake Winnebago and its surrounding landscape.
If wildlife, fishing, and hunting are your family’s preferred recreational activities, the Kiel Marsh Wildlife Area offers more than 800 acres of experiences. A scenic, less than 20-minute drive from the Kiel Marsh Wildlife Area leads to the Killsnake Wildlife Area, where 7,000 acres of outdoor adventure await. And if adventure is what you truly crave, look no further than Ledge View Nature Center for an immersive (and an extreme clothes-dirtying) experience in the caves.
